Red Bull Backyard Digger Netherlands
|
Enthusiasm is rewarded ! (English version only) |
When building dirt-jump trails, there are some key elements you can't do without: a group of locals and friends, proper dirt to work with, lots of shovels and even more enthusiasm. These basic ingredients make a fine base for your enterprise, but when you are planning to build a full-blown dirt jumping spot, a bit of help is more than welcome. To make those dreams come to life, Red Bull initiated the Backyard Digger series in the Netherlands.
Over the period of three weeks, the Netherlands received a solid dirt jumping injection throughout the country. Leende, a small and peaceful village in the South, Groningen, the biggest city of the north, and the country's capital of Amsterdam all had their dirt jumping wishes fulfilled by this unique project. Red Bull provided the heavy digging machinery that you might have seen in action at former Backyard Digging series in Germany, Austria or the Czech Republic and brought in a mastermind to design the jumps: French pro and notorious bon-vivant Patrick Guimez from Hossegor, France.

The kids are alright in Leende An enthusiastic group of local BMX riders like Jason, Jared, Pim, Maikel and loads of others came up with the idea of building dirt jump trails in Leende. Together with Maikel's Dad Ron, they started to collect signatures to get support for their idea and presented them to the local council. Red Bull got air of it, acknowledging the kids' great enthusiasm and initiated a full-blown event to give them what they deserved: a perfectly tailored dirt spot.
At the day of the official opening, literally the entire village of Leende was present to witness the end result. Ron was proudly overlooking the setup, as the finishing touches were put to the three different dirt jump lines. The ‘kiddy park', completely decked out with berms, was already put to the test: "Yesterday it was raining cats and dogs but that didn't stop my sons and their friends from continuing to build on the course. Usually it's almost impossible to get them out of bed on a Saturday morning, but on this day they were ready to hit the dirt before sunrise. And that means a lot!", Ron proudly explains.

In his opening speech, the local council representative emphasized how proud he was to host this remarkable youth project and to have Leende mentioned right alongside Amsterdam and Groningen. When he officially opened the course, the kids sped off towards their bikes, ready to attack the course. The official inauguration performance by Patrick Guimez and Michael Van der Lee was accompanied by lots of "ooohs" and "aaahs".
Rumble in the Dirt in Groningen Just like Leende, Groningen had its own local heroes. Stichting Bikepark Groningen was extremely delighted when they heard their dirt spot in progress was to be added to the Backyard Digger series. Even though the conditions were tough due to the unfortunate weather the week before the event, everyone was motivated to make the best of the first downhill dirt course in the Netherlands. It goes without saying that the team of Stichting Bikepark Groningen was at it every day, from sunrise to sunset.

Considering the tough conditions of the course, the show put on by Patrick Guimez, Mark Vos and two mountain bikers was truly amazing. With Mischa FSO at the mic and DJ Dirk Diggler in charge of the music, it became a laid back afternoon in the sun. When the local police showed up and threatened to shut down the sound system, MC Mischa FSO didn't hesitate to spontaneously introduce a new way of supporting the riders: "silent cheering". The motorized policeman was immediately convinced by this innocent enthusiasm and left the scene with a smile. It was also great to see the freestyle mountain bikers riding the newly built course right alongside the BMXers.
020 Trails in Amsterdam, something for everyone. With one of the biggest local scenes of the country, Amsterdam was not to be missed in this series. The driving force behind this edition was local rider Barry Kohne, whose enthusiasm spread like wildfire. On Sunday morning, the day of the opening, the work paid off in an amazing way: the kids were presented with an enormous take-off ensuring enough speed to hit two different lines: a monstrous big line of three sets and an easier line of 4 sets. Right next to these main lines, a kiddy line was built. The variety of lines and difficulty was not only enjoyed by the experienced Amsterdam locals but also made the local ‘Osdorp' youth like 10- year-old Richard feel right at home. "Yeah, I'm gonna get a BMX now! I think I'll start off with the small jumps and maybe after that the bigger ones. I live right around the corner, so it's really easy for me to come out here and practice", he exclaimed enthusiastically.

The ‘020 trails' were officially opened by Achmed Baâdoud of the local council of city suburb Osdorp. In his speech he underlined how proud he was of the event and that he hoped that the local schools would also make use of the spot: "In addition to more traditional sports, there should also be a place for sports that really appeal to the youth. This course gives room to these kinds of innovative sports." With the help of Barry Kohne, who was somewhat hampered by a broken leg, he smashed a bottle of champagne against one of the two diggers.
After the official opening, a select group of riders attacked the biggest line of the course. Some riders such as Maityn and Bas Brouwer were having a hard time clearing the first set. Patrick Guimez had an obvious explanation for this: "The jumps are still fresh and soft, that's why you loose a lot of speed. In a week's time, the jumps will be even better than today and everyone will easily get through the big line." It was also great to see the entire Leende crew on site, who had enjoyed incredible progress since the start of the project. Standout riders this day were without doubt Patrick Guimez and Mark Vos, as thirteen-year-old local rider Jonas pointed out: "Mark Vos was definitely the best rider today, but that flip whip by that crazy French guy was awesome as well".
