Dave Freimuth CANADIAN CONQUEORS CARDIFF AT THE RED BULL THREE DEGREES

Around 6,000 people flocked to Cardiff Oval Basin today, one of the hottest days this year, to witness legendary rider Jay 'The Beast' Miron from Canada take first place at the Red Bull Three Degrees BMX event.

Competitors from as far as Australia, Argentina, America, Canada, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Austria as well as the UK, came to take part in one of the UK's most anticipated BMX events of the summer.

In addition to first place Jay won the £1,500 prize, whilst Gary Young from USA scooped second place and £1,200. Red Bull sponsored Tobias Wicke from Germany took third place and £1,000. The remaining nine runners up share a joint £2,300 prize purse between them.

The event started with the 32 'pros' sectioned into groups of four competing against each other. The riders made the most of the course utilising the wall rides, jump boxes and specially designed obstacles.

The crowd were wowed by some amazing talent, including US riders Garratt Byrnes reaching as high as 10ft on the notorious jump box and John Heaton pulling off a '360 transfer' whilst Belgian Hanno Cools impressed the crowds with a 'big walltap'. But the day belonged to Jay Miron, whose '360 double tail whip' pushed him into first place.

Hennon Judge Achim Kujawski said: "There was some great riding out there today keeping the crowds entertained for a full five hours. It was a tough draw between Gary Young and Jay Miron, but in the end it was the Canadian Beast that thoroughly earnt first place."

UK riders Bas Keep (Hastings), Luke Marchant (Bournemouth) and Ben Hennon (Newcastle), were amongst the UK riders achieving positions as top 12 finalists.
