TOP SEEDS DOMINATE OPENING ROUND

The first day of the event waiting period saw round 1 of the SWATCH Girls Pro China 2012 hosted by Wanning completed in 1-2ft (waist high) surf at Riyuewan Bay, Hainan Island. With the small swell pulses offering contestable if tricky conditions for the world’s finest women longboard surfers, the top seeds were in the ascendency posting some solid scores throughout the morning, and while conditions went from clean offshores to moderate sea breezes, the scoring potential diminished little. “I wanted to get a strong start and not be chasing a score out there,” said defending event champion Chelsea Williams. “With testing conditions it’s always nice to get a bye through to round 3, I’m stoked to make a strong start and get an 8 on my first wave to start my defence off on the right foot.”

Swatch Proteam rider Kassia Meador breezed through her heat taking a typically relaxed approach to proceedings. “Nobody gets knocked out in round 1, so there’s no real pressure on us. I just caught a couple of nice waves and had fun. The sun is shining, the water is warm, we’re on the beach in China, so what’s not to love about today?” Other top contenders Lindsay Steinriede, Jen Smith and Kelia Moniz all advanced to round 3 with polished performances. “I was pretty nervous with it being pretty much my first contest of the year,” admitted Kelia, last year’s runner up. “But once I’d caught a few waves and got a bit of rhythm going, it felt really nice out there, and I’m really happy to be back in China and surfing this spot.”

The relish for SWATCH Girls Pro China 2012 hosted by Wanning felt by local surf fans and media alike was visible on the golden sands of ‘Sun and Moon Bay’ today, with a healthy crowd shielding themselves from the tropical sun under a sea of umbrellas, getting their fill of autographs and photos of their favourite surfers from around the world. Meanwhile, the event opening ceremony held in Wanning last night saw a crowd of over ten thousand come out to welcome the surf stars. “It’s so nice to see the local people embrace surfing and start to understand and love it more and more every day,” said Swatch local wildcard Darcy Liu. “People have been cheering me on and encouraging me up and down the beach, and the positive vibes are everywhere for this event. I’m so honoured to be invited to surf in it.”
