WANNING SET FOR THE RETURN OF THE SWATCH GIRLS PRO CHINA 2012

On the eve of the SWATCH Girls Pro China 2012 hosted by Wanning, the official press conference was held in Sheraton Hotel, Wan-ning, before a full house of athletes and media from around the world as well as local surfers and dignitaries.
Swatch Proteam rider and ASP no.2 seed Kassia Meador (USA) was explicit about how significant this year’s competition will be in the context of the season. “It’s all on the line here for the girls, the whole year comes down to this event, so everyone wants to be on top form tomorrow when the horn goes, because somebody is going to win the world title here in the next few days.” Returning to Wanning, China after an eye-opening, groundbreaking event here last year, Kassia admitted that aside from the serious competi-ton, being part of putting surfing on the map in China was a huge and rare thrill in today’s surfing world. “There are not a lot of places you can go where surfing is new, where the scene isn’t developed. It’s so rad to see the looks on kids faces here at the beach as they’re catching their first waves after watch-ing the girls surf. It really feels like we’re part of something new and fresh here, and that’s the best feeling for a travelling surfer.”

Meanwhile, reigning ASP World Champion Linsday Steinriede (USA) spoke of the relative lack of pressure she feels in defending her no.1 spot. “I don’t really feel too much pressure or worry too much about heats before I paddle out. I just try to focus on surfing each heat at a time and concentrate on the waves and how best to ride them. Defending a title can be tough if you build it up to be in your head, so I try to avoid that by focusing on the conditions on the day and how best to surf them, and not worrying too much about the other competitors.”
Defending event champion Chelsea Williams (AUS) spoke of her maiden victory at the SWATCH Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning last year, and how the wave itself suits her surfing.  “I love the wave here being on my forehand, it’s really rip-able and suits my technique. Last year I got on a roll here and I’d love that to happen again this year and see how far I can take it.”Swatch local wildcard Darcy Liu (CHN) spoke of the honour she feels in representing her country against the world best female longboard riders, and the satisfaction she feels from watching the sport grow on Hai-nan Island.
“For me I feel so proud to even surf the same spot as these girls let alone compete against them. I’ve been getting so much encouragement form the local community and it feels amazing to fly the flag for China here. The sport is young here but it’s growing day-by-day, an I just hope to inspire as many surfers as I can in our local scene.”

Contest Director Dane Jordan relayed some of the feedback felt throughout the surfing world since last year’s inaugural event, and of the surprise at the genuine quality of the wave at Wan-ning. “Hardly anybody knew there was surf here, and I guess most people figured it would be pretty marginal in terms of quality. I think the images coming out form this event have shocked a lot of surfers the world over as to how fun this place can get. We have a promising forecast for kicking off tomorrow (Wednesday 20th) at the start of the waiting period, so we’ll see what the South China Sea throws at us and take it from there.”

President of Swatch Group China, Susan Chen, expressed the brand’s pride in helping bring surfing to new shores, and how the sport makes helps carry the brand’s message. “Surfing is an dynamic sport about being outdoors in nature and having fun. It’s young, exciting and healthy, and makes a great fit with Swatch’s values. We are delighted to be involved and hope that we can grow this event and the sport here in Wanning, Hainan.”
